Equus 3120 Innova

One of the most exciting improvements in the automotive industry was the addition of the OBD (On Board Diagnostics). It is the computer that activates the vehicle’s “CHECK ENGINE” light.

OBD1 (OBD I) was designed to monitor manufacture-specific systems on cars from 1981 to 1995. Then came the development of OBD2 (OBD II), which is on all 1996 and newer cars sold in the U.S. Like it’s predecessor, OBD2 (OBD II) was adopted as part of a government mandate to lower vehicle emissions. What makes OBD2 (OBD II) more unique is it’s universal application for all late model cars and trucks both domestic and import. This sophisticated program in the vehicle’s main computer system is designed to detect failures in a range of systems, and can be accessed through a universal OBD2 (OBD II) port, which is usually found under the dash. For all OBD systems, if a problem is found, the computer turns on the “CHECK ENGINE” light to warn the driver that there is something wrong and sets a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) to identify where the problem occurred. A special diagnostic tool, such as the EQUUS INNOVA 3120 Code Reader is required to retrieve these codes. It is a perfect unit for do-it-yourselfers, tuners and mechanics alike use as a starting point for repairs.

Equus 3120 InnovaIf you spend a lot of time working on computerized cars, either for fun or to save yourself money, you know that dealing with the dreaded check engine light can be a major pain. Just to diagnose it, $100 bucks a pop is not uncommon.

Sure, you can go to autozone and have them read the code for free and that’s great, but not always practical. Besides, all you get is the basic code, and nothing else.

Investing into a code reader can be a task in itself.. there is a staggering number of choices, ranging from basic readers for about $50 to thousands of dollars. Well, under $300 Equus models have cornered the market in terms of what you get for the money. You can buy a slightly cheaper scanner from other brands but it will not have anywhere near the features of this one.

The 3120 contains just about everything you need for any OBD2 car and 90% of OBD1 cars. I needed the capability to diagnose multiple OBD2 and OBD1 years, ranging from early 90’s to late 2000.. so this was perfect. If you need live data capabilities go for 3140, otherwise these units are identical. Live data may be worth the extra money to you, so consider carefully.

The screen of this scanner is very impressive, giving you the code, code definitions, and a bunch of other data. The manual is pretty comprehensive, and the web can answer any questions that the manual does not.

All of the hardware included is of impressive quality. The only gripe is there is no case or rubber armoring of any kind on the unit. It is solid but cannot be abused in a shop. Shop units of similar capability cost thousands.. as someone put it no, it is not a Snap-on scan tool, but it is darn close and amazingly cheap.
